On April 13, 2012, news was released that explained that the next chapter in the AM had been established with a new relationship with the Congo. At the close of this year’s Winter Conference, the mind of the gathering was to “diligently seek appropriate jurisdictional connections” with an authentic and orthodox Anglican Communion province. It is of particular joy to report the good news that goal has now been realized. Archbishop Henri Isingoma of the Anglican Church of the Congo, received Bishop Chuck Murphy as a Bishop of the House of Bishops in his Province and offered The AM a new canonical residence as a Society of Mission.

The Am is now secure and validly attached to the global Anglican Communion. Until 1992 the Province of the Congo [formerly Zaire] was once part of a larger province, which also included Rwanda and Burundi. A relationship with the Congo began at Winter Conference 2012 when Bishop William Bahemuka Mugenyi made provision for ordinations previously scheduled prior to the split with Rwanda.

The AM now begins the transition toward a Society of Mission with oversight provided by a College of Consultors. The AM will remain committed to its multi-jurisdictional model that originally began the Anglican Mission in Singapore (the Provinces of Southeast Asia and Rwanda)back in 2000.

Now a new canonical residence provides for the AMIA bishops and clergy to begin the transfer their letters from Rwanda to the Congo and Kenya.

This solidifies the AMIA desire to be a mission, nothing more and nothing less, yet continuing the focus on planting churches in North America. The next order of business of the AMIA Society of Mission will be to carefully consider the present structure including the roles of bishops, the Mission Center and its staff, and our Networks and and to prepare the development of the constitution and statutes that will govern the Society of Mission life.

The College of Consultors, Bishops and the leadership team are united in a vision to further develop and carry forth an Apostolic/missionary call to reach those outside the faith yet to know and embrace the love of Christ in effective, creative and new experimental ways.
